When choosing the grain for your home brew beer, keep in mind that malted barley is the grain of choice for most beer. Other types of grains may eventually be added, but barley is the best grain with which to start. The process begins by first growing the barley, and then cooking it so that the seed properly splits. Different barleys have different characteristics, but typically, you would want around 9-10 lbs of base malt per 5 gallons. If you like, you can add 1-2 lbs of specialty grains to gain a better flavor. For increased sweetness, add lighter crystals. Be sure to taste the grain as you create the recipe.
