The hype was right. No Country for Old Men dvd is basically flawless. The Coens have given us a film so unlike anything theyve made before, and in doing so, theyve given us a work of complete, devastating brilliance. The Coen brothers screenplay is faithful to McCarthy without being obsequious. In filming it, they play it straight, and the touches of signature humor that are there dont seem like flashes of style, but organic and right. A masterly tale of the good, the deranged and the doomed that inflects the raw violence of the west with a wry acknowledgment of the demise of codes of honor, this is frighteningly intelligent and imaginative. Violent, poetic, gripping, thrilling and blackly funny: that’ll be the Coens doing what they do best then. Now with added humanity. Thank goodness that experiment in appeasing the commercial suit types is over and the quirky brothers are back to form with No Country for Old Men, a dark and violent exploration of natures hunt and the relevance of time.
