Conga Drums originated in Africa but are most prevalent in Puerto Rico. They come in four different shapes and sizes to choose from. The smallest one is called the nino and the largest is known as the tumba. Originally Conga Drums were made from hollowed out logs and then a skin was nailed on it. Now you will find them not only made of wood, but of fiberglass with a “tuneable” skin. Most artisans prefer to use all four drums to make a unique sound that ranges from low bass to a higher pitch called a quinto. You can express your artistic talents with either the heel of your hand, one or all of your fingers and by slapping the head of the drum. Each producing a different tone.
